Character: Dorsal-fin rays VI-I, 8; anal-fin rays II, 8; pectoral-fin rays 15-17. Body light brown with longitudinal series of small blackish-brown dots, a dark spot of about eye dimeter may present at the upper base of caudal fin. Head light brown with numerous small dark brown spots of variable size, those on operculum about or larger than the spots on body side; flap on anterior nostril darkly pigmented. Second dorsal, anal, and caudal fins dusky to blackish with pale distal margins. 
Habitat: Inhabits protected bays and lagoon reefs. Lives deep in coral thickets, thus is seldom seen by day (mainly nocturnal). Feeds on zooplankton and other small benthic invertebrates. 
Distribution: Indo-Pacific: Red Sea and East Africa to French Polynesia, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Sydney Harbor, New South Wales (Australia). Not yet reported from the Persian Gulf, India, Malaysia, Lord Howe Island, Hawaiian Islands, Marquesan Islands, Pitcai 
Utility: No commercial value.
