Eyes red; head yellow; broad dark band on middle of body, almost equal in width to eye; 1st dorsal and pelvic fins yellow; many small reddish-scarlet spots on posterior half of body; body high and compressed; the second caudal rays unsegmented, simple or with a minor branch at distal tip. 
Habitat: Forms aggregations among the branches of Porites nigrescens and P. cylindrica in sheltered bays and lagoons. Disperses at night to feed close to the bottom. Has been reared in captivity. Popular aquarium fish. 
Distribution: Western Pacific: Ryukyu Islands to Java and New Guinea; Belau to Pohnpei in Micronesia. 
Utility: No commercial value.
