Character: Body cylindrical, massive before first dorsal fin. Caudal fin dorsal lobe extremely long nearly as long as rest of shark. Eyes moderately large at all sizes. Orbit not expand onto dorsal surface of head. Dorsal profile of head convex and forehead strongly convex in lateral view. Horizontal groove absent from each side of the head. Pectoral fins falcate and narrow-tipped. Terminal lobe of caudal fin moderately large. White colour of abdomen extending over pectoral fin bases as a conspicuous patch. 
Habitat: This species usually found in coastal waters over the continental and insular shelves. Ovoviviparous, Litter size 2-4, but usually 2. Maximum total length 549 cm. Size at birth estimated to be about 114-150 cm. 
Distribution: Western Atlantic including Newfoundland to Cuba, Gulf of Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil to Argentina. Eastern Atlantic including Norway and British Isles to Mediterranean, Morocco, Ghana and Ivory Coast, also Cape Province, South Africa. Indo-West Pacific inc 
Utility: This species usually caught with longlines and gill net. Flesh utilized as fresh for human consumption, its liver oil is processed for vitamins, its skin for leather, and fins for shark-fin soup.
