形態特徵：

體長圓而側扁。頭大。吻長。眼大。主上頜骨到達眼睛後緣，尾鰭呈叉狀。前鰓蓋的下部軟且未正常骨化。D. VII-I，9； A. II，8； P. 13； C. 3-4，9+8，3-4； Pred.S. 6-7； GR. 5，6+1+1，3； HL2.45-2.62；BD. 2.56-3.12 in SL；SnL. 3.56-4.44；ED. 3.11-3.72 in HL。本種曾被Smith(1961)視為和A. coccineus為同種異名，直到最近， Mayashi and Kishimoto(1983)才根據兩者在BD./HL.，IS/SL的比例以及鰓耙數的不同，而鑑定為兩個不同的種。體呈淡紅至淡褐色，浸泡福馬林後之顏色差異則從黃棕色到暗紅色，靠背鰭部份自頭到尾鰭基底顏色較深；體被櫛鱗，不易脫落；各鰭蒼白。

棲所生態：

主要棲息於淺水域礁區。白天停留在岩礁下方或洞穴內，晚上則外出覓食多毛類以及其它小型底棲無脊椎動物。

地理分布：

分布於西中太平洋區，自南日本、臺灣至東中太平洋海域等。臺灣除了西部及東部沿岸以外，大部分海域均有分布。
