形態特徵：

體長圓而側扁。頭大。眼大，兩眼距離寬。吻長較眼徑為短，下頜突出，主上頜骨延長到瞳孔和眼眶骨緣中央。頜骨、鋤骨、口蓋骨有絨毛狀齒，無犬齒；鰓蓋後緣接近彎角部份有大鋸齒。尾鰭呈截平。鱗片薄而易脫落。D. VII-I，9；A. II，8；P. 14-15； C. 3-4，9+8，3-4；GR. 1，10+1+2，4；HL. 2.29- 2.52；BD. 2.76-2.70 in SL；SnL. 4.38-5.00；ED. 3.27-3.82 in HL。體灰色，有時帶藍或銀色，頭頂和頜暗色；體側有8-12窄橫帶。第一背鰭邊緣色暗，第二背鰭中央和邊緣，尾鰭緣亦為黑色，圓形部。細條天竺鯛(Apogon lineatus)為本種之同種異名。

棲所生態：

廣泛棲息於由岸邊至深海區的砂泥底質海域。以多毛類或其它底棲無脊椎動物為食。雄性具口孵行為。

地理分布：

分布於印度-西太平洋區，包括阿曼灣、北日本海域到中國海南部等。臺灣北部、南部、西部、澎湖及小琉球海域有產。
