形態特徵：

體長圓而側扁。頭大。吻長。眼大。眼後緣鋸齒；前鰓蓋棘後緣都呈鋸齒狀；前鰓蓋下部未正常化。主上頜骨達眼後緣；鱗穩固，尾叉狀。 D. VII-I，9；A. II，8；P. 14-15；GR. 6，7+1+2，3；HL. 2.49-2.58；BD. 2.66-3.07 in SL；SnL. 3.95-4.28；ED. 3.35-3.69 in HL。體紅色，各鱗具黑緣；浸泡福馬林時則體帶黃色；各鰭白色；而側線部分因缺乏色素胞而呈黃色。本種體色和體形都和堅頭天竺鯛(A. crassiceps)類似；可區別之部份在於本種鱗片較後者小(3-4/26/12-13對2/26-28/9-11)且GR.較少(2+1+8對3+1+14)。

棲所生態：

主要棲息於近岸之珊瑚礁區。以浮游動物或其它底棲無脊椎動物為食。

地理分布：

分布於西太平洋區，包括臺灣、日本及巴布新幾內亞。臺灣除東部海域外皆有產，澎湖亦有產。
