Character: Body elongate, cylindrical; abdomen rounded, without prepelvic or postpelvic scutes, but a W-shaped pelvic scute present. Lower gill rakers very variable. Branchiostegal rays 6 or mostly 7. With 42 to 48 scales in lateral series; vertical striae on scales not meeting at centre. A bright silver band along the entire flanks. 
Habitat: Usually an inshore schooling species, inhabiting relatively clear waters of coastal, lagoon, and seaward reefs. 
Distribution: Widely distributed in Indo-Pacific from Red Sea, east to Samoa and the Tuamoto Islands, north to Japan, south to southeastern and western Australia. It is common in waters around Taiwan. 
Utility: Marketed fresh or dried-salted. Used as bait in the tuna fishery.
