Character: Body elongate, laterally compressed, depth greatest between origin of spinous dorsal and pelvic fins, strongly constricted between pelvic-fin insertion and origin of soft dorsal and anal fins. Head elongate; snout elongate, tubular, with nasal lamellae. Mouth small, vertically oriented, toothless, with single mandibular barbel. Two dorsal fins, the first with V weak spines and the second with 17 to 21 unbranched soft rays; spinous and soft dorsal fins widely separated, each on a raised base; anal fin rounded, situated opposite soft dorsal fin and on a raised base, composed of 17 to 20 unbranched soft rays; caudal fin truncate, rounded, or lanceolate, modified into brood pouch in females; pectoral fins small, rounded; pelvic fins large, situated opposite spinous dorsal fin. Lateral line absent. Body and fins with slender simple cirri. Variable in color from black to red and yellow, usually in a mix of bands and spot. 
Habitat: Usually settles along reef edges in current-prone areas. Uncommon species found solitary or paired, among branches of gorgonians, floating weeds, or crinoids. They feed mostly on mysids but also target small benthic shrimps. 
Distribution: Distributed from Red Sea and East Africa to the Marshall Islands and New Caledonia, north to southern Japan, south to Australia. It is very rare and only found in southern Taiwanese waters. 
Utility: No commercial value.
