Character: Dorsal-fin rays VIII, 24-27; anal-fin rays III, 22-25; pectoral-fin rays 15-17. Body dark orangish brown with slightly irregular, longitudinal blue lines on body following scale rows, breaking into very small spots anteriorly. Prominent black spot at the rear base of dorsal and anal fins; adults with a bluish ring around the eye. Caudal fin yellow in most small juveniles and adults in some populations depending on locality. 
Habitat: A coral-reef species known from the depth range of 2-53 m. Feeds on coral reefs and adjacent rubble-sand aeras by scooping film of detritus and unicellular algae. Occuring singly, in pairs, or small groups. 
Distribution: Indo-Pacific: East Africa to the Tuamotu Islands; southern Japan to central New South Wales and New Caledonia. Not known from the Red Sea, Gulf of Oman, the Gulf, the Hawaiian Islands, Marquesas, Rapa, Pitcairn Islands, and Easter Island. Taiwan: South,  
Utility: Commercial aquarium species.
