Character: Dorsal-fin rays VII-I, 8; anal-fin rays II, 8; pectoral-fin rays 12-13. Body light gray with redish; upper jaw tips of breeding pair protrude; three predorsalss; a pair of uroneurals present; body with two horizontal stripes on body side; the median stripe short; ending before caudal base; caudal fin forked. 
Habitat: May enter semi-enclosed sea areas; forms schools over rocky bottoms. Nocturnal species. Breeding pairs are found from July to September in Japan. Mouth brooding is done by the male. Feeds on zooplankton and other small benthic invertebrates. 
Distribution: Western Pacific: central Honshu, Japan to Taiwan and the Philippines. Also occurs in Indonesia and northwestern Australia, a new record for the northeastern Indian Ocean  
Utility: No commercial value.
