Character: Dorsal-fin rays VI-I, 9; anal-fin rays II, 17; pectoral-fin rays 1+11+1. Large dark spot on the upper corner of the operculum is distinctive. A marginally smaller one on caudal base is present. However, the latter can be turned on or off at will. Usually a broad angular band below the eye. 
Habitat: Occurs in inshore reefs of bays or lagoons, typically hovering in small groups in the recesses of caves. Feeds on zooplankton and other small benthic invertebrates. 
Distribution: Western Pacific: Sumatra to Samoa, north to the Ryukyu Islands; Palau and Mariana Islands in Micronesia. 
Utility: No commercial value.
