Character: Dorsal-fin rays VII+I, 9; anal-fin rays II, 8; pectoral-fin rays 14. Body reddish brown with about 10 dark bars; no large canine-like teeth on either jaw; palatine without teeth; black ocellus on upper part of opercle; lateral line incomplete, reach only 2nd dorsal fin; fins marbled red; caudal fin rounded. 
Habitat: Nocturnal species. Occurs inshore over rocky bottoms. Also found in outer reefs in mixed rich coral and algae rubble slopes. Feeds on zooplankton and other small benthic invertebrates. 
Distribution: Indo-Pacific: Red Sea to the Line, Marquesan, and Society islands, north to the Ryukyu Islands, south to the southern Great Barrier Reef; throughout Micronesia.  
Utility: No commercial value.
