Character: Body elongate, compressed; dorsal contour of head almost straight. Large keeled scales along lateral mid-line of caudal peduncle. Snout short. Mouth oblique, upper jaw extending to a vertical through center of eye, upper jaw extending to a vertical through anterior margin of eye. Teeth sharp, conical, sparsely arranged in a band on each jaw; palatine and vomerine teeth small and sometimes absent. Total gill rakers in first gill arch 8 to 10. Anterior portion of dorsal and anal fins a little elongated in adults, but very long in juveniles; dorsal-fin rays 30-32; anal-fin rays 21-23; caudal fin forked. Scaleless areas above and behind the eyes; lateral scales 42-43 + 3-5(large scales of caudal peduncle). Vertebrae 39-41. Body color dark-brown to black.  
Habitat: Occurs from shallow water to 400 m depth. 
Distribution: Pacific and Atlantic: widely distributed in tropical waters. Eastern Central Pacific: Costa Rica to Peru. Eastern Atlantic: off west Africa. Western Atlantic: Gulf of Mexico, Trinidad. Not known from the Indian Ocean. It is found in eastern and northern T 
Utility: A good quality foodfish. Marketed mainly fresh.
