Character:

D. VII, I+20; A. II, I+17-18; P. i+18; G.R. 2-4+11-13; vertebrate 10+16. Adipose eyelid feebly developed. Maxilla extends well beyond posterior border of eye. Scales on middle of body lanceolate. No scutes. No caudal peduncle grooves. Posterior sofe dorsal- and anal-fin rays consising of semidetached finlets. Head and body dusky green to bluish dorsally, grey to silvery below, large individuals often golden, especially ventrally; sides of adults with 5 to 8 large, plumbeous blotches above or touching lateral line, first 2 may intersect lateral line; dorsal and anal fins dusky to dark, uniformly pigmented; pectoral fins of adults frequently with a dusky blotch ventrally.

Habitat:

Inhabits coastal waters, frequently near reefs and offshore islands. Occasionally found in estuaries. Usually in small groups. Feeds on fishes, cephalopods, and other pelagic prey.

Distribution:

Broadly distributed in tropical and subtropical coastal waters of Indo-West Pacific. It is common in waters around Taiwan, especially in western Taiwan.

Utility:

Food fish; marketed fresh.
