Character: Body oval, deep, strongly compressed. Head length about equal to head height; preopercle smooth, without prominent spines. Snout short. Small protractile mouth with brush-like teeth in the jaws. Dorsal fin with XII or XIV spines, no notch between spinous and soft dorsal fin; and 15 to 17 soft rays; anal fin with III spines and 14 to 16 soft rays; pectoral fins transparent with 14 to 16 soft rays; pelvic fins with I stout spine and 5 branched rays; caudal fin rounded. Body yellow and large black blotch with blue circle on sides; a pair of long narrow blue bands, one above pectoral fin and the other curving from in front of the fin to below it; a blue-edged black bar through eye. Juveniles appear to be very similar in coloration to the adults except for the white outline of the black spot which disappears as the fish increases in size. 
Habitat: Occur in lagoon and seaward reefs in areas with rich coral growth. Juveniles may be found in shallow Acropora thickets. Adults occur in pairs. Omnivorous. Feed on coral polyps. 
Distribution: Widely distributed in Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Pitcairn Group, north to Japan, south to Lord Howe and Rapa islands; throughout Micronesia. It is found in eastern and southern Taiwanese waters, and Penghu Is.. 
Utility: Marine aquarium fish.
