Citation: 臺灣魚類誌(沈等, 1993)
Character: Body oval, deep, strongly compressed. Head length roughly equal to head height; preopercle smooth, without prominent spines. Snout short. Small protractile mouth with brush-like teeth in the jaws. Dorsal fin with XI to XIII spines, no notch between spinous and soft dorsal fin; and 22 to 25 soft rays; anal fin with III spines and 17 to 19 soft rays; pectoral fins transparent with 15 or 16 soft rays; pelvic fins with I stout spine and 5 branched rays; caudal fin rounded. Body golden yellow becoming brown on upper half of sides; a series of oblique redding brown bands, most evident on lower half of body; a curved, broad, yellow-edged black band from rear edge of upper part head to base of middle dorsal spines; a large black spot across caudal peduncle; a prominent black bar through eye with a white bar just behind it. 
Habitat: A nocturnal species that is usually in pairs or small groups in shallow reef flats of lagoon and seaward reefs at depths of 1 to 60 m. Juveniles occur among rocks of inner reef flats and in tide pools. Adults feed mainly on nudibranchs, tubeworm tentacles 
Distribution: Commonly distributed in tropical and subtropical coastal waters of Indo-West Pacific from East Africa to the Hawaiian, Marquesan, and Ducie islands, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe and Rapa Islands; throughout Micronesia. Southeast Atlantic: E 
Utility: Marine aquarium fish.
