Character: Body oval, deep, strongly compressed. Head length about equal to head height; preopercle smooth, without prominent spines. Snout short. Small protractile mouth with brush-like teeth in the jaws. Dorsal fin with XII or XIII spines, no notch between spinous and soft dorsal fin; and 24 to 28 soft rays; anal fin with III spines and 20 to 23 soft rays; pectoral fins transparent with 15 or 16 soft rays; pelvic fins with I stout spine and 5 branched rays; caudal fin rounded to slightly emarginate. Body white with orange to orange-brown oblique bands on the sides. Two broad yellow-edged black bars on the head; one running across the eye and another on the snout. 
Habitat: Occur in clear waters and coral-rich areas of lagoon and seaward reefs at depths of 5 to 25 m. However, it is only common in seaward reefs. Juveniles are solitary, living among branching corals, while adults are almost always in pairs and are home-ranging 
Distribution: Sri Lanka to the Hawaiian, Marquesan and Ducie islands, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe and Rapa Islands; throughout Micronesia. Widely around coral reefs in Taiwan. 
Utility: Marine aquarium fish.
