Character: Bodylongate, compressed, small (to about 8 cm) trachinoid fishes. Eyes slightly protruding, near dorsal profile of head. Snout fleshy, projecting beyond lower jaw. Mouth cleft almost horizontal. Row of cirri bordering lower jaw; symphysis of lower jaw with dorsal projection. Dorsal rays 29 to 33; anal rays 26 to 29; pectoral rays 12 or 13. Lateral line scales 38 to 43. Overall pale with 7 to 9 brown dorsal saddles on head and body. 
Habitat: A cryptic species that occurs on sandy or gravel bottoms. Pointed snout is used for burrowing; eyes directed upwards for sighting prey. Found from shallow tide pools to at least 150 m. 
Distribution: Distributed in the western Pacific from Japan to Australia and the Kermadec Islands. It is found in northeastern and southern Taiwanese waters. 
Utility: No commercial value.
