Character: Dorsal-fin rays 115-120; anal-fin rays 79-85; pectoral-fin rays 13-15. Body flexible. Mouth extremely large, maxillary not projecting beyond tip of snout. No canine tooth. Tip of lower jaw slightly beyond the upper; upper jaw shorter than head length.  
Habitat: Inhabits the deeper continental shelf to depths of almost 1,000 m. Found on sand, mud and clay bottoms. Feeds on larger benthic animals. 
Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: Gulf of Guinea round the Cape to Natal, South Africa. Western Atlantic: Florida, USA and northern Gulf of Mexico to Brazil. Indo-Pacific: off the eastern coast of Africa and off India and Sri Lanka to Japan. Taiwan: South, North-East. 
Utility: Commercial fishery species.
