Character: Body compressed and ribbon-shaped; with greatly prolonged, beak-like lower jaw; upper jaw short, triangular and scaleless. preorbital ridge absent. Nostrils in pit anterior to eyes. Posterior margin of nostril without bony ridge. No spines in fins; dorsal-fin rays 20 to 25; anal-fin rays 20 to 25; pectoral fins long, 25 to 28% of standard length; pectoral-fin rays usually 7 to 9; caudal fin deeply forked, lower lobe much longer than upper. Predorsal scales 48 to 72. Body dark bluish above, silvery white below, without spots or vertical bars on sides; beak dark with a bright red fleshy tip. 
Habitat: Usually oceanic but enters large open bays. Found around islands. Capable of jumping out of the water and gliding above the surface. 
Distribution: Widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific from Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii and Tonga, north to southern Japan, south to Australia, New Zealand and Kermadec Islands. Eastern Pacific: southern California, USA to Ecuador, including the Galapagos Islands.  
Utility: No commercial value.
