Character: Dorsal rays XVII, 7-8; anal rays III, 5-6; pectoral rays 11-12, pelvic rays I, 5; dorsal-, anal- and pectoral-fin soft rays branched. Body compressed, with tiny embedded scales; lateral line prominent with tube-like scales. Dorsal fin originating above front border of eye, the second to fourth or fifth spines elongated, forming a crest. Body almost uniformly brownish with distinct white botches on forehead; dark lines or blotches on the body and fins; margins of all fins usually white. 
Habitat: Inhabits shallow shallow, subtidal areas with sand rubble and weed; also beaches, estuaries, seagrass areas, coral reefs and rocky shores. A strongly compressed fish that can be seen rocking back and forth on the bottom in response to surge. Easily caught 
Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: Andaman Sea to Fiji, north to Japan, south to Australia. Replaced by Ablabys binotatus in the western Indian Ocean 
Utility: Not commerical fishery species. Aquarium species.
