Character: A big-sized, heavy-bodied, broad-headed six gill shark. Body rather stout. Head rounded to bluntly pointed. Eyes small. Lower jaw usually with 6 rows of large, comblike teeth on each side, these with relatively short cusps. Dorsal fin close to upper caudal origin, caudal peduncle short and stout. Distance from dorsal fin insertion to upper caudal origin about equal or slightly greater than length of dorsal base. 
Habitat: A marine and benthic or pelagic species. Live on the continental and insular shelves and upper slopes. A deepwater, sluggish but strong swimming shark. Ovoviviparous, number of embryos very large, 22-108. Maximum total length at least 482 cm. Females mat 
Distribution: Western Atlantic from north Carolina to Florida, USA, northern Gulf of Mexico, Cuba, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Venezuela, southern Brazil to northern Argentina. Eastern Atlantic from Iceland, Norway to Senegal. Indian Ocean including off South Africa, southe
