Character: Body moderately depressed. Preopercular spine with processes on both inner and outer sides. First dorsal fin high in males; almost all dorsal-fin soft rays bifurcate, 8 divided rays in second dorsal fin; anal-fin soft rays branched except first; pelvic fin without free ray; pectoral fin with 17-20 rays. Body marbled brown. In males, first dorsal fin with 4 ocelli and wavy bands; blackish-brown band on preopercle. In females, first dorsal fin black with white margin; anal fin with broad oblique brown lines. 
Habitat: Inhabits sandy areas of lagoon and seaward reefs. Also in sheltered rocky reef habitats in few meters depth, usually in small loose groups. 
Distribution: Distributed in southern Japan to the Marquesan Islands. It is found in western and southern Taiwanese waters; and Siao Liouciou, southwestern Taiwan; Lyudao and Lanyu, southeastern Taiwan. 
Utility: Aquarium fishes.
